This tutorial is quite simple but it has lots of potential. By experimenting with dodge, burn and the eraser tools you can achieve many faded looks. I have kept the lesson simple so that you can learn the basic techniques.

1. If you want to create a retro look remember to choose colours and fonts that envoke the era. For this tutorial I have used Futura on a background colour BF2828. Create your banner and then open a new document and place your logo.
2. Next you want to use your burn tool and create areas of a darker shade to give it an aged look.

3. On a new layer select a 3px rounded brush and randomly add scratches such as the image above.
4. Add a gaussian blur to this Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with a radius of 3.0 pixels.
5. Next add Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen. Repeat this step until a dotted pattern starts to appear.

6. Finally, duplicate the layer you just created by dragging the layer over the New Layer button on the Layers palette (or Layer > Duplicate Layer). Duplicate a few more times, and place in different positions over the design, drop the opacity to about 70% and that’s it.
7. You might want to use the burn tool again to darken certain areas.
8. To create the label effect I then flattenend the image, placed it on a new document and applied Filter > DIstort > Wave.
