A Sunny Day In Southwold?

As you may have noticed (if you are a Brit that is) our weather is doing strange things at the moment! One day it’s hot the next it is pouring with rain, and I mean pouring!
My parents came to stay at the weekend, Thursday was bright and sunny. Friday’s weather forecast was rain all down the east coast, well to be perfectly honest rain was forecasted all over the U.K. Being typical optimists we thought that we had good chance to miss out on the 70% possibility!
So with our determined heads off we set on Friday morning to visit Southwold. It’s quaint little place with a lighthouse, pier and brewery. Plenty to do on “Summer’s Day”!.
However as we got closer to our destination the clouds grew heavier and increasingly more ominous. Then the rain started, ……. We arrived at the pier and saw the waves crashing onto the beach. I’ve never seen them so high and it was quite a spectacle to see the beauty and strength of the sea in all it’s raw power. I was having quite a Jane Austen moment!
The next instant my partner came running past me followed by a cardboard box hot in pursuit, then another then another – it was so windy! However, we thought “well we’ve driven this far we WILL go on the pier!” My mum in her open-toed sandals took a little more persuading, but actually with her Arctic style anorak she was the best equipped and so hung tightly onto my Dad’s arm and off we trekked.
What were we doing? The wind was howling, the waves were crashing up against the sides of the pier and the rain was pelting down. Oh, us Brits know how to have a good time! We are a determined bunch! Well, I think we got about a third of the way up until we decided that actually this WAS quite dangerous! What if there was a massive wave? The Phillips family would be lost forever!
So back we turned gripping tightly onto the rails, heads down and fighting the gale. “Now where?” we thought. “I know the pub!” So off we went for a beer and fish ‘n’ chips – lovely!
A good end to quite an exciting day! We were Brits on holiday after all!

Ah, yes, you Brits really do know how to go on holiday, remind me not to tag along. But, now, the pub and the fish and chips, I could handle that! Great story, Jo, and I love the pictures and design.
Your biggest fan.
