Extract Your Image
There are several different ways of extracting your image from the background. The simplest is using the Extract Filter, the Polygonal Lasso Tool is a little more complex, and Quick Mask takes the longest time but gives the best results. I have used one of my pyrographic works to illustrate these processes.
Extract Filter
1. Open your image and go to Filter > Extract.
2. A window will open, zoom into your image and use the brush to outline your chosen area. If you paint over the image, use the eraser to rub out the green colour from these areas. When you’ve outlined the image, use the paint bucket and fill your selection.
3. Click OK. If you are left with any areas of the background remaining, which is usually the case when using this method, use the eraser to clean up your image.

Polygonal Lasso Tool
1. Choose the Polygonal Lasso Tool and click along the edge of the object.
2. It is easier not to try and select the whole image, divide your work in smaller sections.
3. When you have a precise selection, proceed along the edge of your image until you have a completed selection. Press delete.
4. Repeat this step for the rest of the image.

Quick Mask Mode
1. Select the Lasso Tool and make a rough selection around your image.
2. Press Q to enter Quick Mask mode. The background will be coloured red.
3. Next select a brush tool, set the colour to black and paint around the edges of your image as you have probably missed parts.
4. If you paint over the object use the white colour to “delete” the red from these areas. Remember, the area you see clear is selected, and red area is deselected.
5. When you have finished, press Q to exit the Quick Mask mode.
Cut out your image and paste it onto a new layer.
