Louise Bourgeois, who has died in New York at the age of 98, was one of the world’s most important and influential contemporary artists. Yet it was not until the French-born, American-based sculptor was 70 years old that her work became known to the wider art world. That recognition came when the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented a solo show of her career in 1982.

An exhibition in Bristol by graffiti artist Banksy was among the top 30 most visited global exhibitions in 2008/9.
The Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery event, which attracted nearly 4,000 people a day, and the new Saatchi gallery were the only British entries.
A Buddhist exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum topped the list, with nearly 16,000 visitors a day.

A spiraling sculpture designed by Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor has been chosen as the monument to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games. The 115m tall piece, named the ArcelorMittal Orbit, will be placed in the Olympic Park and will be 22m higher than New York’s Statue of Liberty.
The £19.1m design incorporates the five Olympic rings and will offer visitors panoramic views of London.

Richard Hamilton has embraced many different media since the 1950s, including painting, printmaking, installation, typography and industrial design. This major exhibition will reassess the nature of the British artist’s pioneering contribution, focusing on Hamilton’s political works.
The installations, prints and paintings on view take international politics, riots, terrorist acts and war as their subject matter, examining how these conflicts are represented by the media, including via television and the internet.
