An Introduction to Behavioral Targeting

But what is it and why are so many big-name websites using it? Basically, behavioral targeting can increase site conversions, sales, and reach using a set of offline and web-based tools.

Behavioral targeting is defined as “a technique utilized by advertising companies and online publishers to increase their campaign’s effectiveness.” These can either be ad campaigns, sales campaigns, or publicity campaigns, depending on your site’s goals and purpose.

How Behavioral Targeting Works
There are currently two types of behavioral targeting that publishers and site administrators can use on their websites: onsite and offsite or network behavioral targeting. Both require web analytics, specialized software, and browser cookies.

Onsite behavioral targeting pulls up the user’s previous search and browsing history and uses this information to push targeted content for the rest of the site visit. The behavioral targeting program runs on the sites servers. When a user visits the page, information regarding the visit, previous sites visited, and type of content viewed are noted down.

The data is fed into the program which uses the user profiles to generate a set of user channels. Future visitors to the website will then be classified and assigned to a certain channel, where the type of content to be displayed has already been indicated in pre-defined rules. This is the technique that online shops and e-Commerce sites commonly employ, like eBay and Amazon.

Meanwhile, offline or network behavioral targeting makes use of a larger database because of the nature of the providers that use the technique. Ad servers often display their content on a network of sites that have elected to have their ads placed on their individual sites.

Because of this, the server can generate an approximate demographic makeup of Internet users in general. This still makes use of the user’s previous search and browsing activities, which are used to create various user classes.

More and more advertising networks are turning to behavioral targeting as it has been able to consistently produce favorable results. Online advertising spending on behavioral targeting techniques has consistently increased since the year 2005, up from $220 then several times over to $3,800 in 2011.
