Protest at Canada Goose Flagship Store in London
On Saturday November 12th, protesters held a loud and passionate demo outside the new Canada Goose store in Regent Street for all the coyotes and geese that are killed and mistreated to make the brand’s products.
Behind every fur trimmed hood and down stuffed coat is a brutal reality of Coyotes trapped and left to suffer in the wilderness.
Many of today’s ethically aware consumers would never dream of buying a full length fur but those same shoppers wear coyote trimmed coats without a moment’s concern for the origins of the fur.
‘Leg hold traps are still legal in Canada. Mother animals will chew off their limbs in order to get back to their young. The trapped animal might be there for days before the trapper comes and finds them, they are frightened and starving and in pain during that time. And then they’re bludgeoned or strangled to death or shot.’
Canada Goose, the maker of self-described “luxury apparel” and extreme weather outerwear, has responded to the public backlash against its use of down feathers and coyote fur in its products. The company issued a statement, declaring: “We do not condone any willful mistreatment, neglect, or acts that maliciously cause undue pain, injury, or suffering towards animals, and we are committed to providing full transparency about how we make our products.”
The company states that it is committed to a traceability program that ensures no fur comes from fur farms: only from licensed trappers who abide by the law.We are supposed to be reassured that the fur only comes from regions in North America where coyote populations are highly abundant.
This is not about personal choice. This is about greed and animal abuse. It’s about unnecessarily causing wild animal suffering to make a jacket into a so called luxury item and to raise the price.
